Janet Powers

Meade County Schools proudly announces Mrs. Janet Powers as a 2025 Greenwave Legacy Award honoree, recognizing her decades of service, leadership, and commitment to students, staff, and the Meade County community.

A 1975 graduate of Meade County High School, Janet began her career with the district in 1981 as a Title I reading teacher at Stuart Pepper Middle School. Working alongside colleague Frank Stith, she helped create one of the school’s first reading programs, which they later presented across the state. After 18 years in the classroom, Janet transitioned to the media center, serving as librarian and media specialist for 12 years.

Janet transformed the library into the heart of the school — a welcoming place for students and staff alike. She stocked it with snacks and drinks for staff, decorated the space to lift spirits, and hosted everything from retirements to baby showers. Her media center was a safe haven for many middle school students, especially those who struggled socially or academically. She listened, encouraged, and made sure each student knew they mattered — relationships that have lasted well beyond their school years.

Beyond the walls of SPMS, Janet’s influence has extended across Kentucky. She has been an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1999, chaired the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards program, and traveled across the state to promote the love of reading while proudly representing Meade County.

Janet is the proud mother of Beau, Blake, Seth, and Bliss, and recently celebrated her 47th wedding anniversary with her husband and high school classmate, Dan. Together, they have built a strong family legacy that includes 13 grandchildren, all members of the Greenwave family.

“Janet has lived a life of service filled with purpose, humor, faith, and unwavering commitment to lifting others,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Martin. “She is the kind of friend who shows up, the kind of teacher who makes a difference, and the kind of person we all want to be a little more like.”

Meade County Schools congratulates Janet Powers on this well-deserved honor and thanks her for her remarkable contributions to our schools and community.
