During Opening Day Ceremonies earlier this month, Meade County Schools proudly recognized Mrs. Tara Keen, Special Education Teacher at Stuart Pepper Middle School, as the 2026 Special Education Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Keen was recognized for the individualized and thoughtful way she supports students with disabilities. Her nomination highlighted her ability to adapt instruction based on each student’s strengths, needs, and goals while ensuring accommodations and modifications are meaningfully integrated into daily learning. Through visual supports, flexible grouping, structured routines, and targeted interventions, she makes learning accessible and meaningful for every student.

Her commitment also extends beyond academics. Mrs. Keen creates a classroom environment rooted in respect, empathy, and belonging, while helping students build confidence, independence, and self-advocacy skills. She works closely with general education teachers, families, therapists, and other specialists to provide consistent support across settings.

SPMS Principal Dr. David Phillips praised Mrs. Keen’s impact, sharing that “Tara has a remarkable ability to see each student as an individual and build the support around them that helps them succeed. She is thoughtful, collaborative, and deeply committed to ensuring students feel both challenged and supported.”

Director of Special Education Mrs. Carole Brown added that “Tara Keen represents the very best of special education. Her strong instruction, meaningful relationships, collaboration, and advocacy help ensure that students are not simply included, but truly belong and have every opportunity to reach their full potential.”

Mrs. Keen’s recognition as Special Education Teacher of the Year reflects her dedication to individualized instruction, inclusive education, and helping every student experience success and belonging.

Each spring, an awards committee composed of students, employees, and parents seeks nominations from across the district. Nominees may then choose to complete an application for the committee's competitive consideration.
